The sailors' dock at Sugar Island with five sliding seat "racing machines", probably circa 1910. There is a canoe very similar to these at the Upper Canada Marine Museum here in Toronto, built by Fred Gilbert of Brockville, Ontario. The Kanawa Museum in Peterborough, Ontario also has a similar one in their collection named "Widgeon". In 1906, H. Lansing Quick of Yonkers Canoe Club had a similar canoe, Much Quicker, designed and built by Thomas Fearon, of Yonkers. Much Quicker's rig was very unique for the time employing a single gaff mainsail of 112 sq. ft. on a stayed mast. |
