Canoe Yawl Shadow

This is a large canoe - 18 ft. length and 4.5 ft. beam. I include it for several reasons. First, in 1892, the planing hull for a canoe was very new. The Shadow was among the first. Second, I've manipultated the lines of this canoe yawl to suit both a 17 x 40 A.C.A. National Class canoe and a paddleable 16 x 30 touring canoe. Both modified versions are included below after the original version.

Below are some scaled versions of the Shadow sharpie. The first is scaled slightly smaller to be suitable for the current A.C.A National Class Decked Sailing Canoe regulations. It is a 17 ft. by 40 in. canoe with a depth of 16 in. - this depth is right around the limit alloted by the rule defining the depth of body. I chose the 17 x 40 because it is the all-round size and close to the International Class size. It would be very stable and could be reduced in the waterline beam somewhat giving a bit more flare on the sides. The body plan is exactly the same as that of the original - the depth and width proportions are the same. The centerboard of course would need to be substituted for an appropriate foil daggerboard and the rudder redesigned to slide through the afterdeck. Minor changes of course...

Sheer and Half Breadths of the 17x40 version

The following versions are for a 16 ft. by 30 in. canoe, the depth being kept the same as the 17 x 40. The purpose in mind is for tripping the Great Lake shorelines. There are two body plans presented: the first is a straight manipulation of the original lines; the second has the rocker reduced aft. The reason for reducing the rocker is to facilitate paddling as that is the intention of sailing a narrow canoe - so it may be paddled in no wind situations or when the chop is big and the swells huge as might be found on large bodies of water. I personally would find such extreme rocker (5") disadvantageous and since the purpose is cruising, not racing, quick maneuvering matters less.
