Nice work Alistair,

Is it a trick of the camera lens or does it really get wider in the middle?
If it does get wider does that make for a fancy cassette?
Ian

Hi Ian
Trick of the camera, its straight before it tapers off. Foil made from cnc machined tooling block mould. Its the first step towards the next boat, at this progress I will have a new boat in about 15 years time!

I've got one at 1.07kg that hasn't broken yet but is quite flexy. My new board is about 1.3kg. My boards are pretty small though.
What section are you using?

Hi Chris
Its a slightly dull 0010 naca section, the reason I chose this is that lamina flow sections only work when the surface is good, a few scratches and you loose the flow, hopfully this section is a bit more robust. The cord is 220 at the top (the old one was 245), I am not sure that with my weight and the, at times, lighter winds we sail in that narrower would be any better, I've tried narrower (180 I think) but the boat stalls in the tack or in light winds and goes side ways. What are you using?

Mine's a 8% laminar section - 63-008 I think. 190mm chord. The planform is straight trailing edge / eliptical leading edge. You're right, it is not very forgiving.

Not suprised that it's flexy, its quite a small section that. Just managed to find my old board and weigh it, 2125g, so at least my new one is heading in the right direction. That old one is very stiff so it will be intresting how the boat feels with the new one. Lay up was some 400g triax glass with carbon ud reinforcement in the straight bit (found it in the bottom of the bits box so I am guessing its 400-600gsm). The reinforced section is nice and stiff with the bottom a bit flexy

Andy Paterson (Bloodaxe) made my foil. Its 225mm wide tapering towards the bottom and weighs 1.3kg. It is pretty rigid and has managed to put up with my 85kg standing on it. I've no idea what section it is, but I haven't noticed any tendency for it to stall out, when compared with my previous foils that have been 250mm wide. Each time I get a new boat, I seem to lose about 25mm on the width of the board, but I'm not sure I would go much narrower.

The section is 63A2 the most moderate of the 63 series, with no hollow in the aft sections.
This seems to be a good low drag section that doesn't stall out too much.

Layup is 4 tapered layers of 300g/m² UD carbon + a light glass weave over 200kg/m³ high density foam.
