International Canoe Promotional DVD

I have been asked to get some quotes on making a Promotional Video for the International Canoe Class. An ideal time for getting a majority of this footage would be at our 2008 World Championships (http://www.icworlds.org), which is a part of the Sail Melbourne Regatta. At this event we will have IC's, AC's and Development Canoes.

My rough idea of what we would be looking for as a final product is a DVD with a selectable menu offering:

We don't want to bore people, we want to capture their imaginations and get them interested in knowing more about the IC. (Only people already interested in the class will want full racing coverage - even then only the most hardcore of us will sit through every minute of every race).
I have had one quote back from a guy called Tim Barrot, his work can be found at http://www.onthewater.com.au/. And we have other interested people aswell. We want this to be a professional product, and that does often come with a bit of a price tag - so can I get your thoughts and ideas on this concept?

I think the class could also do with a set of good quality close quarters "how to do it" videos covering the major manouvers that could be web published on class websites. If some shooting could be arranged as part of the same package (organise some guys to do demos on the way out to the start, that sort of thing maybe) it would be great.

I'm not a great buyer of vidoes I'm afraid, so don't have that much input to offer on the main theme.

Great Idea! If we could all get one could we use it as a screen saver at home or work. I could get it played at Cowes week (Big Screen) & RIR & then bore/intrige my colleagues totally by leaving it on all day !!
Whilst useing the worlds footage would suit the purists It's the speed/blood & guts of it that makes people stop & wonder. best of luck. :lol:

A good concept. My only thoughts are this: When you show a fleet of canoe's racing on the open water its very hard to show the speed. I borrowed a few videos from Eric (worlds in San Fran and Port Stephens) before I bought my boat. The only bits that are exciting to watch are the markroundings when its really blowing. You have a bit of action, and having the mark shows the speed.

To get some exciting footage it needs to be planned (I think). For example:

Take a couple of good sailors out on a very windy day, and blast around close to shore (giving a frame of reference). Including a few lasers hiking their guts out and not going anywhere or leadmines equally not going anywhere would be good too!

Kris has some good points, planning and having a reference to show just how bloody good the IC's are is important.

Some good footage of starts in some wind can make good viewing. Also the New York Canoe Cup Challenge with the team racing v's fleet racing could make a good DVD or addition to the promo and can serve as part of the history.

No idea what the budget can hanlde the "how to vid" is a good idea also having the "how to" vid might help new blood into the class if they can study some good how to tips while drying out

Yes there is a Port Stephens video, Eric Dunbar has it on VHS. But it isn't the easiest to watch, it was filmed quite far away from the action and probably from a small boat as the camera shakes a bit.

Planning is a necessity.
We have had two quotes back, one is from a professional company who will put together a package with us for around the 6k mark.
The other is from an IC sailor who is also keen.

I have submitted the quotes and details to the ICF Sailing Committee for consideration.

Keep the ideas and suggestions coming though, as I plan to have a good chat to both parties early next week about what can be achieved and how we do it.

I'll say one thing, it is very easy to spend a lot of money and not get much back for it. The 'how to' stuff might be better done with one boat at another time.

So, if you see yourself as a choreographer, or reckon you can write a good script on what the average punter wants/needs to know about IC's (and see them do on the water) to get them keen on the class. Then I want to hear from you!

My idea:

1. Open with footage of an IC hooning upwind (or fine reaching depending on weather and sea state), view looks like it is from the sliding seat but camera (on chase boat) pans back to show an IC dead flat, skipper fully hiked, and footing fast.
2. Show the IC Logo and the DVD Title
3. Phase into some ‘send it’ footage of IC’s DC’s and AC’s pushing the envelope:
a. Mark Roundings
b. Good tacks and Gybes
c. Plenty of spray, and end of seat action
4. Voice over breaks over:
a. The International Canoe is a one-man craft of 5metres long, 1 metre width powered by 10 square meters of sail. It is characterized by its means of creating righting moment, the sliding seat. By no means unique, and certainly not new, the sliding seat is a beam that slides athwartships on a track, enabling the sailor to hike out far to windward. The result is a long, skinny boat, very light for its length and sail area, which goes very fast!
5. Some more ‘send it’ footage (with some exciting background commentary on the action)
6. Voice over cuts in
a. Overview of the history of the class taken from http://www.intcanoe.org/icabout.html including a slide show of relevant historic pictures
b. Special mention on the Challenge Cup (2nd oldest sailing trophy behind the Americas Cup)
7. Back to modern footage and interviewing guys on the beach (I’m thinking Steve Clarke here as he is internationally known in sailing -and has a voice people listen to)
a. Getting Steve to talk about the IC and how it compares to other classes
8. Switch to specific DC footage
a. Getting Steve to talk about the new developments in IC’s (don’t mention DC’s as this will date the footage if/when DC’s become the rules for all IC’s).
b. Voicover guy come in with the other developments that have marked this remarkable classes progression (pics/footage as applicable)
i. 1892 when the sliding seat first appeared
ii. 16ft canoes in 1909
iii. Using a mizzen sail as a jib in the 1930’s
17ft canoes in 1936
iv. First fully battened mainsails in 1946
v. Adopting of the Nethercott Hull (current IC shape) in 1971
vi. Pioneering of Carbon Fibre Masts in 1982
vii. Advent of the AC in the 1990’s
9. Switch to a UK sailor to speak on AC’s and their foothold in the UK and Europe – add footage (may need video from UK)
10. Pan back to general footage and stills on and off the water – Voice over speaking on the sizes and age of people who sail the International Canoe
a. Splice in some ‘on the beach interviews’ of what sailors think of the class
11. Show some racing footage – Voiceover speaks of where the International Canoes are currently raced (fleets in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, UK, USA), World Championships every three years
12. Back to the best footage (action, tactical, even becalmed if it makes a nice shot) – Voiceover advises on where interested people can find out more about the IC and links in their country http://www.intcanoe.org

The above is my idea for 8-10 minutes of Promotional footage, please use it as a starting point and say what you'd add at 4a or 7b.... Or if you have a better idea please forward it along.

I have the draft copy of the Promotional DVD and it looks pretty good.

· Opens with some IC/DC/AC footage though a porthole type focus

· Breaks into Steve Clark talking about the history of IC’s while standing in the McCrae boat park (unfortunately B14’s in the background) while flashing through pics of old IC’s and video footage

· Breaks into some lifting music and shows IC sailing scenes

· ‘On the water’ then do a simple description of the IC and explain that they are a class for a more experienced sailor – then breaks into some Weymouth footage to music most scenes sped up for effects

· At 4 minutes it breaks into a round up of the World Championships

· Interviews with Hayden and Phil S and Chris Maas – on water scenes

· Goes into a video summary of the World Championships – Race results on screen between scenes

· At 11 minutes Alan Powell talks about the NYCC International Challenge Cup – breaks into Heat 2 footage (where there was wind)

· Finishes with Tim, Hayden and Seth holding the jug then fades out at 12.46

I think it looks good, some things I would like to add are:

· Junior and Ladies Results at end of Worlds footage

· A thrills and spills scene (if we have the footage) tacked on for a minute or so at the very end – like a cliché outtakes section (else we only have Jim Reeder and Rob getting wet)

Other than that Nic and I reckon it’s pretty good. I'm getting Alan to have a look over it, and if it gets the thumbs up then we'll get the DVD finalised and distributed to National Associations.
