Short of buying a seat for it next to a trusty courier on an airplane, what is the best way to get this irreplaceable piece of sailing history from Germany to the US?

Chris,
It was sent as registered mail from Australia to Germany it appears it got there ok (eventually) I packed it in bubble wrap and then it bwas wrapped in a heavy cardboard. I figure the important thing is for it to be traceable so we know where it is throughout its journey from A to B. The best option is for it to be sitting on someone lap on a plane but that not always practical. I don't know what the mail system in Germany is like so someone from there will have to join in. The other option which might be more feasible than it was from OZ is via Fedex or a courier of the like.
Cheers
H.
