Bow Strakes

Post by TimClark » Fri Aug 22, 2008 3:14 am

Has anyone ever tried bow strakes on a IC? I'm thinking something along the lines of the new Volvo 70's, specifically Team Russia. Thanks.

Hi Tim, these have not been tried to date ( to the very best of my knowledge) as they would have been outside class rules for the 'one design', 'classic'. Possible to make them legal within the new rules for IC's. New canoes now much quicker than the older IC, just a few driver problems holding them back.

The topsides aren't how they should be, nor is there enough volume in the bow, but the bow strakes give a basic idea of what they would look like. So, what do you think? My worries with something like these is that the IC might not be moving at a high enough speed for them to be truly effective as they would be on the larger boats, rather they would just be a good source for extra drag!

Forgive my ignorance, but what do these strakes assist with?

Things vaguely on these lines were used on Cherubs back in the 60s. If my memory serves me right they fell out of use because the feeling was that by the time the bow was deep enough for them to be making some difference you were already doomed anyway. But of course that's a 12 foot boat. A canoe is a very different dynamic.

Hi Christian,

These strakes add volume when the bow goes down, and are at their most extreme on the new Humphrey designed Volvo 70 “Team Russia”

It seems to be pretty dammed efficient but pretty dammed ugly!! Note how they stick out at the back end, I've heard the boat described as "agricultural"!
